. . .going to the Sports Arena and watching Roller Derby. Yes, San Diego had a team back in the 1970's, and yes, I actually loved watching the girls hit, push, shove, and whip it around the track. I knew that it wasn't all for real, kinda like watching Monday night wresting, but once I started watching I was mesmerized by the action.
There was an article in today's newspaper that San Diego has a team, the San Diego Derby Dolls, and they are the 2009 national champions. The Dolls compete once a month at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, and their final run for the season will be November 21.
"Whip It," opens today, and stars Drew Barrymore and Ellen Page. Once the movie catches on it won't surprise me if Del Mar isn't loaded with a new generation of roller derby fans on the 21st. And yes, I just might be there too.
